We are a Route to Resilience school

In the 2018/19 academic year, we successfully took part in a programme called Route to Resilience. This is an evidence-based, practical approach to supporting and developing the emotional wellbeing and resilience of children and young people.

As part of this programme, we submitted the work we had conducted throughout the year and are now pleased to announce that it reached such a standard that we have been successful in becoming an accredited school.

Our work throughout the year centred on developing the key characteristics that students would need in order to not only achieve whilst at SVC, but also prepare them for life beyond. We began this journey by gathering views about which characteristics would be the most crucial. Having identified a large list (an example of a selection of these can be found below) we set about developing methods through which we could develop them in all of our students. These strategies ranged from themed assemblies, tutor periods, use of target setting and planning opportunities within the taught curriculum for students to demonstrate and develop further their identified character they wished to improve.

Alongside the work with our students, we also developed some parent and family workshops which highlighted areas where these characteristics could be further developed beyond the school gate.

Much of this work centred on our Core Values which I am sure you will be aware fall under Aspire, Enjoy, Achieve. It is through the core values that the route to resilience work continues into this academic year and beyond in programmes such as ELEVATE which is currently running in Year 7 and 8 (soon to be in Year 9 too). One of the reasons we were successful in being accredited is because of the sustainable nature of our work. The need to support students in developing emotional wellbeing and resilience is only increasing due to the world in which our young people now live in, which is why we are proud that the great work of all staff has been recognised with this accreditation.
