Careers Education, Information, Advice and Guidance & Employability Learning Policy

Through a planned programme of activities, Careers Education, Information, Advice and Guidance (CEIAG) and Employability skills, Soar Valley College seeks to help all students take their place as suitably qualified and responsible adults within society. The focus is upon career and option choice, raising the aspirations and achievement of individual students and equipping them with skills, attitudes, knowledge and understanding as a foundation for managing their lifelong career and learning. Students at Soar Valley College undertake a wide range of Enrichment activities to enhance and support the curriculum.

The primary aims of the Careers Education and Guidance programme are to:
• Help young people develop an understanding of their own and others’ strengths, limitations, abilities, potential, personal qualities, needs, attitudes and values
• Help young people investigate opportunities for further learning and employment, make decisions and manage transitions across key stages
• Ensure that, wherever possible, all young people leave the school with employment, further education or training

Soar Valley College uses the Gatsby Benchmarks as a guide to plan our Pathways and Enrichment programme. As part of our commitment to informing our students of the full range of learning and training pathways on offer to them, we are happy to consider requests from training, apprenticeship and vocational education providers to speak to students.

Soar Valley College also proactively seek to build relationships with these partners as we plan our Pathways and Enrichment activity throughout the school year to ensure that providers have multiple opportunities to speak to students and their parents across years 7- 11, to offer information on vocational, technical and apprenticeship qualifications and pathways.

Soar Valley College ensures that all staff involved in personnel guidance and pastoral support are up to date on their knowledge of these post 16 and pathways, through a programme of Continuing Professional Development. Opportunities for providers to speak with students may include school assemblies, employer and provider engagement events or opportunities to speak with students and parents on a one-to-one basis supporting GCSE, post 16 option choices.

Soar Valley’s Enrichment programme is monitored for quality and impact by the Senior Leadership and Governance Teams and monitoring of access to and opportunities to engage with, technical, vocational and training providers will form part of this process.

Year 8
• Stem workshops

Year 9
• An opportunity for students to meet a variety of local employees and quiz them about their jobs, their personal educational journeys, and the importance of employability skills.
• Information, Advice and Guidance to assist with option choices.
• Trip to Skills Show in Birmingham (TBC)
• Opportunity to visit local NHS Careers Fair
• Lunchtime careers ‘drop-ins’ with local employers

Year 10
• WOW (world of work) week including;
• Industry visit
• Careers carousels workshop
• Mock Interview with a local employer
• Lunchtime talks on applying for medicine, setting up your own business, and apprenticeships.
• Talk from LIAISE about applying for post-16 colleges.

Year 11
• Post 16 Evening with attendance from all local post-16 providers and local universities
• Information on National Citizenship Service, with opportunity to apply
• Appointment with Connexions Advisor
• Lunchtime talks from local post-16 providers
• Lunchtime talks on applying for medicine, setting up your own business, and apprenticeships.

Year 10 Programme of Study
Students complete a 13 week programme of IAG, and rotate with Health Education and Core PE.
• Understanding the importance and purpose of CVs, and completing one.
• Completing research about post-16 options, looking in detail at different post-16 pathways, providers and personal options.
• Understanding interview techniques, with the opportunity to take part in a mock interview with a local employer.
• Understanding of employment law, and protected characteristics
Transition Post 16
The College offers a range of information, advice and guidance to help students make well-informed and realistic decisions about their future. The law states that everyone has to stay in education or training until their 18thbirthday. In addition, students who do not achieve a Grade 4 in Maths or English Language are required to re-take the course at college.
Students are given information about the range of choices available to them which include:
• A full-time course(This might involve A levels or a BTEC, or a combination of both) or
• An apprenticeship or traineeship.
We work closely with all post-16 providers in Leicester and Leicestershire to ensure students are aware of the range of options available to them, and the entry requirements for each course and provider. UCAS Progress is the on-line application system, which all students will use to apply for at least 2 post-16 places during Year 11.

The timetable for the application process is as follows:
September: Post-16 Transition Parents’ Evening
October - November: College Open Days
November - December: Students complete UCAS Progress application form during lesson time
January: Applications sent off
January - April: Post-16 Interviews take place
March - April: Offers confirmed by colleges, and accepted or declined by students

Students have the opportunity to meet with the Careers Advisor throughout their time at Soar Valley to assist them in making choices.

Post 16 Talks
Over the next few months Post 16 providers are holding their Open Day events. We strongly recommend that you visit the college your son or daughter would like to attend to learn more about what they can offer your child.
External Partnerships
Soar Valley College has developed external partnerships with a range of industries across Leicester City in the process of widening the experiences of our students’ knowledge of the world of work. Opportunities derived from experiences such as being host to events during Leicester’s Business Festival, developing our partnership with Leicester’s Enterprise Advisor Network and continuing to nurture our well established connections with a range of colleges and universities, mean that our students benefit from hands on experiences in a range of post 16 settings.
During our annual Yr10 ‘World of Work’ scheme, Employers visit the school to run work-related activities with pupils and to speak to pupils about a range of employment sectors. There have been recent developments with employers offering apprenticeships and information is shared with pupils about available apprenticeships via our range of external visiting experts and the Careers Advisor. In addition, employers offering apprenticeships visit the school to facilitate work-related learning and speak to pupils about opportunities within their companies and sectors. Any provider wishing to request access should contact the Careers Leader in the first instance. Our ‘World of Work’ week, towards the end of the summer term, is the perfect opportunity for education providers to speak to relevant pupils.
