Creative Arts

The Creative Arts Faculty comprises Art & Design, Drama and Music and is staffed by nine specialist teachers.

Our ‘state of the art’ facilities include: a suite of three art classrooms, two music rooms with practice rooms, an ensemble room, a recording studio; two drama studios and a large performance hall. All learning areas are fully fitted with the latest specialist equipment and ICT facility, including interactive whiteboards, projectors, and computers.

We endeavour to ensure our pupils experience a broad and balanced arts curriculum that develops knowledge, skills and understanding in each of the subjects as specified by the National Curriculum at Key Stage 3 and the examination courses at Key Stage 4.

In Years 7 and 8 all pupils experience two lessons of Art & Design, Drama and Music each fortnight. In Year 9 pupils have two lessons of Art & Design and Music and one lesson of Drama. Pupils are taught in mixed-ability groups. At KS4 pupils may choose to study one or more course from: GCSE Fine Art, GCSE Graphics, GCSE Photography, GCSE Drama, and Rock School – Access to Music. Pupils experience five lessons over the two-week time-table. Our KS4 courses provide an excellent foundation for further study in the arts at post-16.

There is an enriching programme of extra-curricular clubs and activities available at lunchtimes or after-school. There are also opportunities for pupils to participate in school shows, music concerts, arts evenings and exhibitions. We regularly offer trips to the theatre and art galleries. There is an extensive schedule of peripatetic music lessons.

Key Stage three assessment descriptors are attached below.  The “learning pathway” (e.g.  8-9) indicates the likely GCSE grade that a student may expect at the end of year 11, based upon both their current attainment and year of study.

Here at Soar Valley College, we are very proud of our talented young artists.  To celebrate their hard work and effort in Art and Design, every month art work is selected from all year groups to be showcased on our Artist of the Month display.  In addition to their success, all our young artists are rewarded with a Soar Valley Star badge by the school Principal, Mrs Robinson.  Near to the end of the academic year, we will also be selecting our Artist of the Year so watch this space!  Congratulations to all those who have produced outstanding work and click here to see our Soar Valley Artists so far...
