National Poetry Day

On Thursday 7th October, Soar Valley College joined many schools up and down the country in celebrating National Poetry Day. The theme this year was 'choice' and students in Year 7 and Year 8 spent an English lesson exploring ecopoetry, which examines how the choices humans make have an impact on the environment.

Inspired by their work in the lesson, students were invited to enter a piece of their own ecopoetry into the college's inaugural National Poetry Day Competition. Over a hundred poems were entered, with students writing in a variety of forms, from acrostics to free verse, and tackling a myriad of environmental concerns, from plastic in our oceans to deforestation. Twenty poems were shortlisted and three overall winners were chosen. Judging was certainly a difficult task as our students produced some expertly crafted poetry which approached the topic with flair and maturity.

Congratulations to the winners and all those who entered!
